Course Description

This course will introduce you to the doctrines, concepts, and themes that shape American property law. We will study the meaning of the term property, justifications for property rights, and the many ways in which the law limits or qualifies property rights. We also will consider the roles of the various institutions and actors that shape the property law system, including private individuals, communities, legislatures, courts, and agencies. Along the way, the course will familiarize you with broader theoretical principles and lines of argument that should be useful in upper-level property courses and many other areas of law.

Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Understand and apply basic principles of American property law;
2. Articulate key arguments for and against significant property-related rules and policies;
3. Interpret different sources of property law, including judicial decisions, statutes, and regulations.
