Equal Employment Law examines the law regulating employment discrimination and equal employment opportunity, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. It is an introductory course designed to give students a solid grounding in the fundamental principles of employment discrimination law and the major analytical frameworks for conceptualizing discrimination and equality in the workplace. The course will combine a pragmatic, litigation-oriented perspective with a theoretical, sociological one, as it investigates the assumptions underlying various legal approaches and situates legal trends within larger social and historical contexts.
(Note: although officially listed as a 3-4 variable credit course, this course is only being offered as a 3-credit course in Spring 2016. Students who have registered for 4 credits are requested to alter their registration to 3 credits. Students who wish to do an additional credit in this area may, however, undertake a 1-credit Directed Research project under Professor Leachman's supervision, which will be graded on a pass-fail basis only.)
