Course Description
This survey course examines the following
topics: the international legal system; statehood; recognition of states and
governments; international legal personality; the structure of the United
Nations and the legal character of international organizations; state
succession; self-determination; nationality and the status of individuals;
human rights and human rights institutions; treaties, custom, general
principles, and other sources of international law; the role of international
law in the domestic legal system; diplomatic protection of individuals; state
responsibility; extradition law; institutions for dispute resolution and
criminal justice, including the International Court of Justice, arbitration,
war-crimes tribunals, and truth and reconciliation commissions; responses to
terrorism; humanitarian law; peacekeeping and the use of force; collective
security; and regional security arrangements. A third credit is available for students who wish to submit a paper on a relevant topic. The instructor is James Nafziger, Professor of Law & Director of International Programs, Willamette University.
