This course will examine how law shapes the development and introduction of new biomedical technologies, and how complex social forces shape the law with respect to new technologies. We will study several new and emerging technologies including stem cells, gene therapy, genetic testing, new reproductive technologies and synthetic biology. Several course sessions will focus on the regulation of human subjects research, and the evolution of this body of law in response to the changing nature of biomedical research. The course will also address some issues in genetic engineering of agricultural products and foods. You do not need a science background to understand the material or to excel in the course, although a science background may make the readings somewhat easier.
