An externship opportunity in health law is available each fall. This externship will only be open to those students enrolled in the law course 935 “Health Law and Administration”. The number participating in the externship will be limited to five (5) students for three (3) credits, for nine hours per week. The students’ work at the externships will be graded as either satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
Externship Sites
Sites for externship placements may include government agencies, public interest law groups, law firms, trade associations, and health care institutions. Examples of recent sites include:
- University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation
- University of Wisconsin-Madison Office of Administrative Legal Services
- University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics
- Law firms
Value of the Externship Offering
The externship offering will allow students who are enrolled in the health law course to engage in a useful health law experience involving working with a practitioner in the field and observing the practice of law in action. These “real world” experiences will enhance the students’ classroom experience. In addition, the externships provide an opportunity for a pro bono contribution to the provision of health law services in a public interest or public service setting. Finally, the externship placements will provide students with an outlet in which they can demonstrate their skills and talents. This work could potentially generate future career opportunities.
In addition to providing opportunities for law students, the externship offering has added benefits for the Law School, the University, the community and the State. Connections will be formed between the Law School and lawyers in the community who have an interest in and appreciate the opportunity to interact with the Law School. The externships will also reflect the University’s commitment to providing services to the community. Finally, the externships may help to provide much needed services to disadvantaged groups in the community and in the State.
The textbook for this course is “Health Law” (6th Edition) by Furrow et al. It can be purchased in the law school Bookmart.
