Gone are the days of scavenger hunts in the library and lectures about how to do research. In keeping with our focus on learning by doing, students now learn about research by completing gradually more complex research tasks within the research course. Beginning in the first week of class, students learn to retrieve legal sources and to evaluate their usefulness. To provide students with a balanced approach to electronic research, students are taught through these exercises to appreciate the economies and values of old-fashioned book research for some tasks and of electronic research tools for others. While we want students to understand how to research both ways, we want them to appreciate the increased subtlety of hands-on research.
