Matthew Desmond says eviction isn't just a consequence of poverty but a cause of it — and a growing one.

According to Desmond, who earned a sociology doctorate at UW-Madison, millions of American families face losing their homes every year. His book, 'Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City," follows the stories of eight of them, as they struggle to find affordable housing in Milwaukee.

Desmond was on campus Nov. 1 to deliver a talk on 'Evicted,' the 2016 selection for UW-Madison's common-book program, Go Big Read. Before leaving town, he sat down for a question-and-answer session with Dean Margaret Raymond. They discussed Desmond's writing process, what drew him to the study of eviction, and the role legal practice and policy play in the problem.
