Thomas Perez is the nation’s 26th secretary of labor. Before his appointment in 2013 by President Barack Obama, Perez worked as assistant attorney general for civil rights at the U.S. Department of Justice and as special counselor for Senator Ted Kennedy. He also previously served as president of the Montgomery County Council and secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.

In addition to his public service, Perez taught at the University of Maryland School of Law and the George Washington School of Public Health. He received a law degree and a master's degree in public policy from Harvard University.
