Schedule for 1L Orientation

Mandatory orientation activities for all first-year students begin on Wednesday, August 26, and end on Friday afternoon, August 28. The schedule also includes some optional activities sponsored by student organizations. Classes begin on Wednesday, September 2.

Wednesday, August 26

8:30-10:30 a.m. Check-in (required for all students) Present photo ID. in Rm. 2260. Muffins and beverages available in the atrium.

8:30-10:15 a.m. Photos for Law Student Directory taken in Rm. 3260.

8:30-10:30 a.m. Building Tours by Student Bar Association (SBA) every 15-20 minutes starting in atrium. Listen for announcements.

8:30a.m.-3:00 p.m. Buy Criminal Law Books: Books for Introduction to Substantive Criminal Law available for purchase in the Continuing Legal Education (CLEW) office, Rm. 2320, Wednesday through Friday. Cash or checks only.

10:45-11:45 a.m. Welcomes from Deans, Faculty and Student Leaders in Birge Hall, Room 145. SBA reps lead students to Birge Hall, leaving from the atrium. Meet Dean Kenneth B. Davis, Jr., Associate Dean Walter J. Dickey, Professor Brad Snyder, Asst. Dean Mike Hall, Student Bar Association President Matt Jalandoni and the president of the Middle Eastern Law Students Association, Nadya Elnagdy.

12:00-1:30 p.m. Lunch with Small Section classmates. Lunches, including vegetarian option, available in the atrium. Please get lunch and join your classmates and SBA reps in room assigned to your Small Section. (See your Small Section Activities Schedule in check-in folders).

2:00-4:00 p.m. Meet your Small Section Professor & Participate in Know Your School competition. The Small Section that wins the competition will receive a cash prize on Thursday. (See your Small Section Activities Schedule).

4:00-6:00 p.m. Student Organizations Fair in the atrium. Rent lockers from SBA for $65. Cash or check only.

Thursday, August 27

8:30a.m-3:00 p.m. Buy Criminal Law Books: Books for Introduction to Substantive Criminal Law available for purchase in the Continuing Legal Education (CLEW) office, Rm. 2320. Cash or checks only.

9:00-10:15 a.m. Coffee and rolls in the atrium. Meet representatives of the State Bar of Wisconsin and learn about programs for law students. SBA will rent lockers for $65. Cash or check only.

10:30-11:15 a.m. Information about financial management and important post-application Character and Fitness updates from Asst. Dean Mike Hall and Asst. Director Rebecca Scheller will provide information about financial management and important post-application Character and Fitness updates in this presentation in Room 145, Birge Hall. Martina Diaz of the campus Financial Aid department will join them.

11:15-11:45 a.m. Getting Ready to Join the Legal Profession Asst. Deans Kevin Kelly and Ruth Robarts will provide information about requirements for admission to practice.

11:45-noon Safety Issues from a Student Perspective: Mary Blandford and Darcy Copeland, third year students, will give their perspective about personal safety issues and comment on resources available to students.

Noon – 1:30 p.m. Lunch on your own

SBA will rent lockers for $65. Cash or check only.

1:30-2:30 p.m. Trials of Law School in Rm. 145, Birge Hall. SBA reps will show selections from a documentary film about the law school experience.

3:00-400 p.m. Discussions of law school life & challenges with SBA at the Law School. (See your Small Section Activities Schedule).

4:30-6:30 p.m. Barbeque with faculty in Boerner Plaza (adjacent to atrium). Rent lockers from SBA for $65. Cash or check only.

Friday, August 28

8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Criminal Law Books: You may buy books for Introduction to Substantive Criminal Law in the Continuing Legal Education (CLEW) office, Rm. 2320. Cash or check only.

9:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Buy Books for other courses: You may buy books for all other courses from the Book Mart in Room 2215, according to the schedule for your Small Section. Cash or check only. (See your Small Section Activities Schedule for the book buying time and the Law Library Orientation Tour schedule. Both are in check-in folder).

9:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Rent lockers from SBA for $65. Cash or check only.

9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tours of Law Library (15-20 minutes).

9:30-10:30 a.m. Photos for Law Student Directory in Rm 3260 (makeup session)

10:00 a.m. – noon Women Law Students Association brunch in Rm 2260. All are welcome.

Saturday, August 29

3:00-7:30 p.m. SBA presents the “Welcome to Law School”scavenger hunt. Meet your Small Section at Boerner Plaza (outside the atrium) at the Law School at 3:00. You will follow clues that lead you around campus and State Street. Post-hunt festivities immediately following at the Law School and there will be prizes, because law students love competition. Please bring one digital camera per group.
