Hannah Berkowitz and Emma Shakeshaft, both graduates of University of Wisconsin Law School, have been selected for 2018 Equal Justice Works Fellowships. They are among the 67 lawyers selected for this year's two-year fellowship.

Equal Justice Works annually selects a new class of public interest fellows, who have designed innovative projects to address unmet legal needs in their communities. Fellows have represented thousands of adults, children and families in need in communities across the country.

Berkowitz's project involves embedding legal services into a Head Start preschool, with the goal of improving family stability, child well-being and kindergarten readiness. The 2018 UW Law graduate is hosted by the Legal Council for Health Justice in Chicago.

Shakeshaft, a 2012 UW Law graduate, plans to advocate for individuals in Milwaukee County who have been jailed for failure to pay fines, and to urge courts to pursue fairer, more equitable approaches to criminal justice debt. She will be hosted by the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin.
