The ABA Section of Business Law is sponsoring its 21st annual Mendes Hershman Student Writing Contest to encourage and reward law student writings on a business law subject of general and current interest. Each ABA-accredited law school, acting through its dean, is asked to nominate by February 26, 2007, a paper considering aspects of business law written in the 2005-2006 or current academic year by a student currently enrolled in the law school's J.D. program. The paper may be 1) specifically prepared for this contest; 2) submitted in a class, seminar, or as an independent study; or 3) a proposed law review/journal note, comment or article. The paper should, however, be the work of the submitting student without substantial editorial input from others. Papers submitted are normally 20-30 pages long, but in any event should not exceed 100 pages of double-spaced typed text, including footnotes. A student need not be a member of the Section of Business Law to participate in the contest. Monetary prizes for the contest consist of $2,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place. The first place winner will also receive an all expense paid trip to the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA, August 10-14, 2007. We know participation on your part will entail faculty or administration effort, and in recognition of that effort, a matching monetary award will be made to each winning student's law school, to be used to expand its business law library. I encourage your school to participate in the Section's Mendes Hershman Student Writing Contest. This is a wonderful way to promote your law school and be recognized among the legal community. More detailed information and an entry form can be found at: www.abanet.org/buslaw/hershman/. If you have any questions concerning the administration of the contest, please contact me at 312-988-5584 or at richardsl@staff.abanet.org.
