3 members of the LawMeets team: Amy Harriman, Kelly Wilfert and Emily Yslas

A team from the University of Wisconsin Law School recently placed third at a LawMeets moot court competition on transactional law held on March 23 at Duke Law School.

The team members were Kierre Elvington (3L), Amy Harriman (2L), Kelly Wilfert (2L) and Emily Yslas (1L) and were coached by Mike Anderson, chief legal officer and senior vice president at CUNA Mutual Insurance Group, and Professor Yaron Nili.

This is the second year that UW Law has participated in the annual competition, which allows students to experience first-hand how transactional work is conducted in practice.

“This experience provides students with invaluable lessons that will serve them for years to come,” said Professor Yaron Nili. “It was extremely rewarding to see our team put their new knowledge into practice by drafting and negotiating complex deal documents in such an impressive manner.”

Prior to the competition, the team spent several months learning about the transactional issues that the case posed. The team prepared a proposed draft agreement and provided markups on an agreement submitted by a team from another law school. They communicated with mock clients and adjusted their draft to address client needs.

“This competition allowed our students to gain experience that is very close to what they may experience as practicing attorneys. They now have a deep understanding of some of the most important topics in transactional law,” said Nili. “It is another example of UW Law’s commitment to providing immersive, hands-on learning experiences.”
