Charles Ureña, a third-year UW Law School student, has received the 2019 Burton Award for law school writing. He is one of ten law students nationally to receive the award.

Urena’s winning entry, “Reading Sexual Orientation Protections into Title VII: A Moral Revitalization Theory of Statutory Interpretation,” was published as a comment for the December 2018 edition of Wisconsin Law Review.

According to the awards website,“The Burton Awards are given to the authors of legal articles that demonstrate creativity, knowledge and know-how. While the length and subject matter of the legal articles are not limited, the winners will display a true understanding and mastery of the law and their writing must be clear, cogent and concise.”

The nonprofit awards program is run in association with the Library of Congress, presented by lead sponsor Law360, and co-sponsored by the American Bar Association.

Ureña and the other award recipients will be honored at a ceremony, gala reception and dinner at the Library of Congress on May 20.
