Senator Tammy Baldwin ’89 opened the 2020 QLaw Gayla with a pre-recorded welcome, commending guests for their courage and activism on behalf of the University of Wisconsin Law School’s LGBTQ community. The event took place at Madison’s Park Hotel on Saturday, Feb. 28.

“Everyone in this room is committed to promoting full and equal participation in the legal community,” Baldwin told Gayla attendees. “Thank you for all you do.”

QLaw is a student organization dedicated to serving LGBTQ students at the Law School, as well as the larger UW community. Each year, QLaw hosts the Gayla to celebrate the efforts of its members and allies.

Law Dean Margaret Raymond echoed Baldwin’s praise. “QLaw’s continued service to advance awareness and fight discrimination makes us a better, more inclusive law school and community. We are committed to working together to make UW Law an open and welcoming place for all,” she said.

Mario White ’08, a Dane County Circuit Court Commissioner, presented the evening’s keynote. White received this year’s Inclusion Idol Award in recognition of his commitment to defending the rights of LGBTQ people. Additionally, Gayla proceeds will go toward a scholarship in White’s name to be awarded to a QLaw member during the 2020-21 school year.
