The case-based training format encourages peer interaction and exchange of ideas, along with session facilitation by patient advocacy experts. Due to the one-on-one and small group nature of the case-based training format, attendance will be limited. For more information and an application to one of the three case-based training sessions contact Kathleen O'Connell at kaoconnell@wisc.edu.

This program has been underwritten by the University of Wisconsin - Madison's prestigious Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment. The Center for Patient Partnerships was awarded this grant, which funds the program 'Finding a Port in the Storm: Guidance for Wisconsin families to navigate the health care system. It is enabling the Center, in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, to develop and test this case-based curriculum to train Employee Assistance Professionals and Human Resources personnel as they help Wisconsin employees and families more effectively navigate the health care system. This funding is also helping the Center develop an online consumer health care self-advocacy guide, including topics such as how to communicate with health care providers, make more informed medical decisions, and sort out financial, legal, and employment issues related to serious illness.
The nominal fee of $25.00 will be assessed to cover expense for session materials, break refreshments, and a working-lunch for participants.
Yes! This program has been approved for 6 recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR, and GPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certifcation Insitute (HRCI). Professional development hours will also be available to Employee Assistance Professionals. In addition, the University of Wisconsin Extension Office will be providing certificates of completion to participants for training verification for other professional certification requirements.
Program Facilitators hail from the Center for Patient Partnerships, an interdisciplinary educational center training future lawyers, doctors, social workers, pharmacists, business professionals and policy makers in the art and science of patient advocacy. Founded by Martha Gaines and colleagues at the University of Wisconsin, the Center has provided advocacy services to more than 1,200 patients and trained countless students. Advocacy services include assistance in medical decision-making, gaining access to quality care, negotiating with insurers, sorting out employment issues, planning for medical debt, and transitioning from recovery to survivorship.
As the Center for Patient Partnerships grows, you can help educate, advocate and innovate to make health systems more consumer-centered. Though we do not charge for our advocacy services, we welcome contributions to the Center. Please join the mission by contributing!
