BiographyJonathan Zarov joined the Law School in 2012 as associate dean of the newly formed external affairs team. He manages the team, knitting together marketing, communications, media relations, alumni relations and events management to promote the Law School and tell its story. The work of the team supports admissions, development, and other communications-intensive areas.
He comes to the Law School with 25 years experience in marketing, communications and journalism work. He has promoted organizations in higher education, arts, health and tech.
Zarov earned a BA in English (creative writing emphasis) from UW-Madison in 1985 and then pursued a career in music fronting a touring rock band, where he also held the title of emperor for public relations. He worked in publishing in New York City in the late 80s, writing and editing for magazines such as Harper's, Rolling Stone, Spy, Kirkus, and Publisher's Weekly.
Returning to Madison, he combined his editorial and promotional skills to lead marketing and communications efforts for a number of Madison arts organizations, including Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (then Madison Art Center), Madison Children's Museum, and Overture Center for the Arts, as vice president of marketing and communications.
He spent a decade managing general communications and prevention campaigns for UW-Madison's University Health Services. While there, he also served as communications manager for the PACE Project, a campus-community coalition to reduce high-risk drinking on the UW-Madison campus. More recently, he spent two years directing marketing for the Wisconsin Initiative to Promote Healthy Lifestyles (WIPHL).
Zarov has managed rebranding and logo development projects in many of his positions, including projects for Overture, WIPHL, and Networked Insights, a fast-paced social media tech startup where he spent two years as marketing director.
He remains active in Madison's arts and culture scene, hosting a weekly interview show on WORT community radio and playing occasional musical performances.
