Biography

Robert E. Shumaker is a shareholder with DeWitt Ross & Stevens S.C. He has litigated disputes in state and federal trial courts and before administrative agencies for more than thirty years. He served as Chair of his firm’s Litigation Practice Group for more than twenty years.

Mr. Shumaker has represented clients ranging from individuals to major publicly owned corporations regarding a wide variety of matters. In particular, he has extensive experience resolving business, employment, and employee benefits disputes. Recent significant cases he has successfully litigated involve the Wisconsin Fair Dealership Law, covenants not to compete in employment agreements, property tax valuation, employment law, real estate, and trust administration.

Mr. Shumaker received his BS, with distinction, in 1976, and his MS in 1983. Prior to attending law school he was a secondary school social studies teacher for seven years. He graduated, cum laude, from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1986. He is a member of the Order of the Coif, and, while in law school, he served as the Senior Articles Editor of the Wisconsin Law Review and as a legal writing instructor.

Mr. Shumaker also serves as a mediator helping parties resolve disputes both prior to and after the commencement of litigation. In 2012, he completed Northwestern University’s Mediation Skills Training Program and is a mediator in the Dane County Bar Mediation Program.

Mr. Shumaker is a member of the bar of the state of Wisconsin and is admitted to practice in the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western District of Wisconsin, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the litigation, appellate, labor and employment, and health care sections of the Wisconsin Bar Association, and the litigation, labor, tort and insurance law, and health care sections of the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the Dane County, Western District of Wisconsin, and Seventh Circuit Bar Associations as well as the Wisconsin Association of Mediators.

In addition to other civic and professional activities, Mr. Shumaker is a Past President of the Western District of Wisconsin Bar Association, a former member of the Village of Maple Bluff Parks and Recreation Committee and currently a member of the Village of Maple Bluff Zoning Board of Appeals.

Mr. Shumaker is an active member of the Rotary Club of Madison and the Chair of the Rotary District 6250 Ethics Committee, which helps local Rotary clubs and other groups provide ethics related programs to students in their communities.

Mr. Shumaker has taught civil procedure at the University of Wisconsin Law School from time to time since 2004.
