Transfer Students
To apply as a transfer student, you must have attended an ABA-approved school and must be academically eligible to continue as a regular full-time student in the school you last attended. At least 50 of the 90 credits required for the J.D. degree must be earned at the University of Wisconsin Law School.
Transfer applicants are generally accepted only when they rank within the top 15% of their classes, depending on the quality of the law school from which they are applying. Enrollment pressures force a limit on the number of transfer applicants that can be accepted, with about 10-15 applicants matriculating in the fall. The competitiveness in any given year depends on the overall quality of the applicant pool and available space. Preference is given to Wisconsin residents who apply for transfer on the basis of strong academic showing at another law school.
To apply, you must submit the same items required of a first-year applicant, with the exception of a current LSDAS report. We will accept a copy of a prior LSDAS report sent by your current law school. For more specific information, see our Law at Wisconsin bulletin and Application.
Visiting Students
To apply to be a visiting student, you must be in your final year or final semester of law study. We require all the items listed for a first-year applicant, with the exception of a current LSDAS report. We will accept a copy of a prior LSDAS report sent by your current law school. For more specific information, see our Law at Wisconsin bulletin and Application.
The Certification Form referred to in the Application Instructions is not required for Transfer and Visiting Students applications.
Transfer and Visiting Students applications must be postmarked by July 1st and sent to Law School Admissions Office, 975 Bascom Mall, Madison, WI 53706.
