Course Description

A tort is roughly defined as a civil wrong, independent of contract: liability for physical and emotional harms inflicted by intentional misconduct or negligence, or without fault, and development of concepts and techniques in analyzing and solving tort problems.

Upon completion of this course, students will:

1. Understand the fundamental rules, theories, policies, and values of the common law of torts.

2. Be able to identify, analyze, and resolve basic tort law issues and problems.

3. Be able to critically read appellate court decisions and understand how lawyers and judges use rules, facts, and policies to make legal arguments.
