Course Description

Equal Employment Law examines the law regulating employment discrimination and equal employment opportunity, including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. It is an introductory course designed to give students a solid grounding in the fundamental principles of employment discrimination law and the major analytical frameworks for conceptualizing discrimination and equality in the workplace. The course will combine a pragmatic, litigation-oriented perspective with a theoretical, sociological one, as it investigates the assumptions underlying various legal approaches and situates legal trends within larger social and historical contexts. The course is listed for three credits, with a fourth credit optional. Those taking the course for four credits are required to write a final research paper or brief of at least 15 double-spaced pages on a topic of the student’s choice. The paper may be used to complete the upper-level writing requirement. All students are also required to take an eight-hour take-home exam.
