This seminar will address the legal treatment of children by exploring a number of contemporary policy issues relating to children, and by examining the opportunities and dilemmas of child advocates who seek reform through legislative or judicial action. Among the topics that may be covered are: (1) overview of children’s rights generally; (2) legal representation of children and ethical considerations; (3) educational issues, including school choice and freedom of expression in public schools; and (4) government restrictions on minors’ rights. Students will be asked to write a research paper and present it to the class. The introductory family law course is not a prerequisite.
