Course Description

The Advanced Seminar in Federal Indian Law will include 1) three light-reading, mini-course units, and 2) a small exercise in related research, writing, and class-presentation. In general the light-reading, mini-course units will focus on certain topics in the relationships between the Federal Government, the several States, the “Indian tribes”, and their respective, if overlapping, citizenries. This year each mini-course will include three weeks of case law lectures on regulatory topics in “Indian Country” (as that term is defined in the US Code): Indian Gaming, environmental matters, and taxation. Each student will do a research, writing, and class-presentation exercise on any self-selected topic in Federal Indian Law. The final grade will be based on the paper and presentation, which can be for two or three credits.
