Sydney Hawthorne

Sydney Hawthorne, a third-year student at University of Wisconsin Law School, has received the 2014 Joseph P. Mettner Foundation Scholarship.

The scholarship provides financial assistance to law students pursuing a career in public service. It was created in 2010 to honor the life of Joe Mettner, a 1992 Law School graduate.

Michelle Mettner, along with friends of her late husband Joe, formed the foundation. “Our scholarship committee was very pleased with the increased number of quality applicants,” she said. “We selected Ms. Hawthorne because she demonstrates the qualities Joe embodied.”

Hawthorne received her bachelor’s degree in political science from Michigan State University. While studying at UW Law, Hawthorne has served as managing articles editor for the Wisconsin Journal of Law, Gender & Society, clerked for the City Attorney’s Office in Madison, and interned for Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Annette Ziegler, as well as for the Michigan House of Representatives.
