Cindy May

UW Law librarian Cindy May has received the 2014 Distinguished Service Award from the Law Librarians Association of Wisconsin.

A chapter of the American Association of Law Libraries, LLAW was established to cultivate the profession of law librarianship in Wisconsin and to develop the usefulness of libraries and the skills of their users.

The award honors May for more than 40 years of outstanding service to LLAW, law libraries and the legal community. May began her UW Law Library career as a cataloguer and reference librarian in 1973, helped found LLAW in 1981, served as its president in 1986, and went on to chair a number of its committees. She has maintained a “Recommended Readings” column for the LLAW newsletter since its first publication in 1982.

Law librarian Victoria Coulter nominated May for the award. “Cindy has brought nationwide attention to Wisconsin law libraries over the years. I can’t think of anyone who has given more of her time and energy to LLAW, AALL and law librarianship,” she said.

May plans to retire from the Law Library in August 2014.
