University of Wisconsin Law School Clinical Professor Gretchen Viney has been named the recipient of the 2011 Marygold Melli Achievement Award, which is conferred by the Legal Association for Women (LAW) to recognize significant contributions to women in the law.

This is the 17th year that the Melli Award, named in honor of UW Law School Professor Emerita Marygold (Margo) Melli, has been conferred.

A reception to honor Viney will be held Thursday, April 28, at Murphy Desmond, S.C., 33 East Main Street, Suite 500, from 5 to 7 p.m. All are welcome.

Viney is a clinical professor and associate director of the Lawyering Skills Program at the Law School. She shares responsibility for the Lawyering Skills Course, a second-semester 7-credit course that introduces students to law practice. Outside the LSC, she also teaches Client Interviewing & Counseling, Real Estate Transactions, and Guardian ad Litem Practice.

Viney is a former Secretary of the State Bar of Wisconsin. She has been an active member of the Bar for nearly thirty years, having served as secretary and also on numerous boards, committees, and divisions. She is also past-President of the Sauk County Bar Association.

“We are honored to name Ms. Viney as recipient of this award,” said LAW President Nelle Rohlich. “Throughout her career, Ms. Viney has tirelessly promoted equality and social justice, advancing the interest of women in society, the legal profession and the community.”

When reached for her thoughts on receiving the award, Viney commented, “I was nominated by a former student who sees me as a role model for her and for other law students and lawyers. I never set out to be a role model, so I am somewhat surprised—although admittedly very honored—to be in this position. To have my name associated with Margo Melli is both uplifting and humbling.”
