Event Description
We are pleased to announce the 2023 Wisconsin Journal of Law, Gender & Society symposium on “Surviving Intimate Partner Violence: How the Legal System Routinely Fails Survivors of Domestic Abuse.” Domestic violence is one of the most pervasive crimes in the United States. On average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. In one year, this equates to more than 10 million men and women. Unfortunately, our current legal system often fails to support domestic abuse survivors. With the criminal legal system being the primary tool utilized by the United States to combat intimate partner violence, many survivors are unable to seek support because of barriers to access of the legal system paired with the very real fear of facing persecution.
This in-person event will feature research, papers, and community leaders who are experts in their field and committed to evaluating the shortcomings of our current legal system, as well as alternative approaches and reforms to better support domestic abuse survivors.
