Course Description

Development of the modern civil action including pleading, discovery, and the pretrial conference; the trial; motions after verdict and judgment; appeals; state and federal procedures.

Course goals: By the end of the semester, you will have had the opportunity to build the following skills:

• To understand the rules that provide the framework for resolving federal civil disputes,
particularly during the pretrial period of litigation;
• To build real world competencies through participation in pretrial advocacy exercises that
reinforce civil procedure rules (exercises include law and motion hearings, depositions, and
preliminary injunction hearings);
• To improve legal writing and exam-taking skills through three (3) writing assignments that reinforce
course material;
• To learn the importance of making strategic choices as an advocate; and,
• To prepare students for any summer position that relates to litigation or requires advocacy skills.
