Course Description

Federal Jurisdiction is an advanced course in constitutional law focused on separation of powers and federalism as those structural features of the Constitution relate to the federal and state court systems. Topics covered include Standing, Ripeness, Mootness, the Political Question Doctrine, Supreme Court Review of State Court Decisions, State Sovereign Immunity, and Habeas Corpus. Students thinking of taking Federal Jurisdiction should understand that it does not overlap with Civil Procedure II (even though both satisfy the Jurisdiction of Courts requirement). CivPro2 covers personal and subject matter jurisdiction, venue, transfer, forum non conveniens, joinder, class actions, the preclusive effect of judgments, and the Erie doctrine--all important topics that every lawyer is expected to understand. It is helpful, though not required, to take CivPro2 before taking Federal Jurisdiction.
