Biography

Joshua Topel is a Clinical Fellow and Research Associate in the Economic Justice Institute, where he will co-teach and supervise law students in the Consumer Law Clinic (CLC). Joshua hopes to use his recent law school experience and previous work in consumer law to provide clinical law students with a rewarding and successful clinical experience, while providing legal assistance to Wisconsin consumers and working to remove unjust legal barriers for Wisconsin debtors.

Joshua received his J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School in May 2024, where he primarily focused on consumer law and property law. Joshua was also a member of Sports and Entertainment Law Society (SELS). During law school, Joshua was a clinical student in the CLC and worked as a summer Project Assistant for the CLC. As a CLC Project Assistant, Joshua helped launch the Garnishment Relief Project, which provides free legal assistance for Wisconsin debtors in the wage garnishment process and helps them obtain possible exemptions or pursue alternative options for relief. During law school, Joshua also worked for the Coalition for Property Tax Justice (Coalition), a nonprofit collective of 15+ grassroots organizations based in Detroit, Michigan. With the Coalition, Joshua led a revamped 2024 Detroit Property Tax Appeal Project, which provided free property tax assessment appeals for over 540 Detroit citizens. Additionally, Joshua assisted in the Coalition’s legal research that helped pass an important Property Tax Reform Ordinance in 2023.
