Biography

Margaret Raymond is a member of the law faculty.  From 2011-2020, she served as the Fred W. and Vi Miller Dean of the University of Wisconsin Law School. As Dean, she served as the chief academic and executive officer of the school, with responsibility for faculty and staff development, personnel oversight, strategic planning and institutional vision, fundraising, external relations, budget planning and management, curriculum and student affairs.

Professor Raymond received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Carleton College and earned her J.D. at Columbia University School of Law, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Columbia Law Review and was awarded the John Ordronaux Prize.

She served as a law clerk to the late Justice Thurgood Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court and the late Judge James L. Oakes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Following her clerkships, she practiced as a commercial litigator and a criminal defense lawyer.

She was a member of the faculty at the University of Iowa from 1995-2011, where she was named the William G. Hammond Professor of Law and was honored with the law school's Collegiate Teaching Award. While at Iowa, she held a number of campus leadership roles, including serving as president of the Faculty Senate.

Professor Raymond's scholarship focuses on the professional responsibility of lawyers, constitutional criminal procedure, and substantive criminal law. She is the co-author of a Professional Responsibility casebook, The Law and Ethics of Law Practice (with Hughes, 2d ed. 2015).  From 2013-2019, she served as a member of the Standing Committee on Professional Ethics of the Wisconsin State Bar.  She participates regularly in providing ethics CLE programming to Wisconsin lawyers and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Lawyers Mutual Insurance Company (WILMIC).

  • Margaret Raymond presented "The Other Half: Challenges of the Part-Time Rural Prosecutor," during the South Dakota Law Review Seminar on Rural Lawyers on Sept. 21, 2023, at the Knudson School of Law at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.
