On Jan. 1, 2013, Linda S. Greene, Evjue Bascom Professor of Law at University of Wisconsin-Madison, will become the University of California at San Diego’s first Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (VC-EDI), a position created by the University of California Board of Regents and filled after a nationwide search.
“Linda has dedicated more than two decades to UW-Madison,” says Interim Chancellor David Ward. “She has made a tremendous impact at the university and especially at the Law School. We are grateful for her work and wish her the best with this new opportunity at a great institution.”
In her new role, Greene will lead the development of a diversity strategic plan for UC San Diego and will oversee all equal opportunity and diversity and programs at the University of California San Diego.
“Professor Greene's experience and her commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion make her well qualified to provide leadership as VC-EDI,” says UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla and Executive Vice Chancellor Suresh Subramani in a campus announcement. “We look forward with great enthusiasm to her partnership in our efforts to create a more welcoming, diverse and inclusive campus community.”
Greene served as associate vice chancellor for academic affairs from 1999 to 2004. During that time, she led a strategic hiring initiative to help promote new areas of interdisciplinary scholarship and curricular offerings and to increase the number of women in science and engineering, and minority faculty generally. She led professional development and retention initiatives and developed and promoted policies to advance gender equity. Greene also led other inclusionary programs that supported faculty as well as staff and enhanced the educational experience of students.
“She’s been a wonderful colleague and great citizen of the university for a long time,” says John Wiley who was provost and chancellor while Greene was AVC. “Linda has done a terrific job and is very widely respected and admired around campus. She did a wonderful job here, and I’m sure she will for them as well.”
Prior to becoming associate vice chancellor, Greene was devoted to faculty governance at the UW Law School as well as UW campus wide. She was also an innovator in law faculty diversity initiatives nationwide.
“Linda Greene's contributions to the Law School have been profound,” says Margaret Raymond, dean of the Law School. “We are deeply appreciative of all that she has done here and wish her all the best in her new opportunity.”
