The Latino/a Law Student Association and MATC United Common Grounds are hosting a fundraiser to support the Immigrant Justice Clinic, Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The event will be held at Top of the Park, Best Western Inn, 22 S. Carroll Street in Madison.

The featured speaker is Juan Cartagena, president and general counsel of LatinoJustice PRLDEF.

The Immigrant Justice Clinic provides direct representation in immigration court proceedings to noncitizens detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Immigrant Justice Clinic is the only clinic in the entire State of Wisconsin that provides free legal representation to individuals in removal proceedings. Students organize monthly “Know Your Rights” presentations to detainees at the Dodge County Jail, and participate in community education and outreach projects. IJC works with indigent-defense attorneys to provide assessments of the immigration consequences of criminal charges and collaborates with the Legal Assistance for Institutionalized Persons clinic on cases involving post conviction relief.

The Immigrant Justice Clinic results from several years of work by the Latino/a Law Student Association. They recognized the unmet need for low-cost and pro bono legal services for noncitizens, and won a three-year Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea grant. This year is the final year of financial support, the clinic is looking for additional funding to continue its work.
