John Ohnesorge takes helm of EALSC, Charles Irish to be Senior Director

The East Asian Legal Studies Center (EALSC) at the University of Wisconsin Law School officially changed directorship on January 1, 2010, when Professor John Ohnesorge became Director and Professor Charles Irish became Senior Director.

The Center was founded in 1990 with Irish at the helm, assisted by colleagues Susan Katcher and Ethel Pellett. EALSC has been actively engaged in East and Southeast Asia, causing the UW Law School to be well known in institutions there and fostering numerous exchanges of students and professors, lawyers and judges.

Irish commented on the first change of EALSC leadership in nineteen years: “While I’m comfortable with what we have accomplished in the past, I’m very excited about the Center’s future under Professor Ohnesorge. He will bring new energy and new initiatives to the Center. I anticipate that the Center and the Law School will benefit greatly under his direction... Professor Ohnesorge is a true scholar of the region. He has a deep understanding of the cultures, languages, laws, and institutions in the region, which will serve him well as an effective representative of the Law School, the University, and the State as he continues the Center’s work in East and Southeast Asia.”

Irish’s full valedictory message and other sections of the November 2009 EALSC newsletter can be found here.
