University of Wisconsin Law School Legal Advocacy, Analysis, and Writing professors chose 20 students’ trial briefs for the Spring 2026 Best Brief Competition. The semifinalists are William Aldana, Niccolo A. Cucco, Emily C.R. Eggers, Marin Ellington, Kristina Gorecki, Henry Grasso, Haley Johnston, Kylie Kapelke, John Karteczka, Yujin Ko, Trent Kosciolek, Tessa Lynch Mather, Rebekah Pranga, Mia Provenzano, Will Scheder, Aidan F. Sevintuna, Matt St. John, Tiana Sullivan, Eric M. Thulien and Vince Zipperer.
A panel of Wisconsin attorneys will rank the briefs this summer. The finalists will be read by a panel of UW Law School faculty to decide the winner, which will be announced in September. The briefs are anonymous throughout the judging process.
The Best Brief Competition is an annual event that recognizes outstanding legal writing by first-year law students. This is the competition’s 24th year. See past winners.
