Question: Where is the Hooding Ceremony taking place?

Answer: The UW Law School’s Hooding Ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. at the Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center, located at 1 John Nolen Dr, Madison, WI 53703.

Q: What time do I need to arrive?

A: Students: Line up in the designated room by noon.

Family: Doors open 90 minutes before the ceremony for guests.

The ceremony starts at 1 p.m., and no guests will be allowed to enter the Exhibit Hall during the processional.

Q: Can I bring a bag with me?

A: The UW Law School Hooding Ceremony follows the same bag policy as the UW Commencement Ceremony: UW Commencement Carry-In Policy.

Each attendee is allowed one small clutch purse (6.5” x 4.5”) and one large clear bag (either a one-gallon clear storage bag or a 12” x 6” x 12” clear tote). All items and guests are subject to search, and storage is unavailable for prohibited items. Items left at the entrance will be disposed of.

  • Items related to a medical condition
  • Flowers (without glass vases)
  • Diaper bags (with child)

Prohibited Items:

  • Opaque bags larger than 4.5” x 6.5” (backpacks, purses, camera bags, drawstring bags, fanny packs, binocular cases)
  • Flags, banners, or signs
  • Food and beverages
  • Containers
  • Strollers, baby carrier seats
  • Laser pointers, noisemakers, selfie sticks, tripods, inflatables
  • Weapons
  • Any items deemed dangerous or inappropriate
  • Umbrellas

Q: How many family members can I invite to the ceremony?

A: There is no limit to the number of guests you may bring.

Q: Do I need to register for the Hooding Ceremony?

A: Yes, registration is requested for both graduates and guests attending the ceremony.

Q: Do my guests need to register for the Hooding Ceremony?

A: Yes, registration is requested for all guests attending the ceremony.

Q: Is foreign language captioning available?

A: Yes, foreign language captioning is available via Zoom's automatic caption translation feature.

Q: Who should I contact with questions?

Q: Can I hood my student?

A: Unfortunately, due to logistical constraints, we are unable to allow guests, friends, or family members to hood individual students.

Q: Where are the bathrooms?

A: Bathrooms are located in the back corners of both sides of the Exhibition Hall.

Q: Do I need a ticket?

A: No, tickets are not required. However, registration is requested for all attendees.

Q: What if I can’t afford academic regalia?

A: If you are unable to rent academic regalia due to financial hardship, the Chancellor’s Office offers a scholarship through an application with WiSH. More details are available on the UW Commencement website: UW Commencement Caps and Gowns.

Q: What is the deadline for ordering a cap and gown?

A: Academic regalia can be rented or purchased through the UW Bookstore. To save $20, place your rental order by April 1st.

Q: Do I need to wear academic regalia to participate in the Hooding Ceremony?

A: Yes, academic regalia is required to participate in the Hooding Ceremony.

Q: Where should I park?

A: Monona Terrace Convention Center has its own parking garage on-site for an hourly fee: Monona Terrace Parking.

Q: What is the ceremony etiquette?

A: The UW Law School Hooding Ceremony follows the same etiquette rules as the UW Commencement Ceremony: Ceremony Etiquette.

Respect for all attendees is essential for the enjoyment of this special occasion. Disrupting university events, including graduation activities, is a violation of state law and will not be tolerated. Violators may face suspension, holds on degrees, registration, and official university records, as well as potential arrest and criminal charges.

Please ensure all electronic devices are silenced during the ceremony.

Q: Can I reserve seating at the ceremony?

A: Due to logistical constraints, seating cannot be reserved. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Q: What if my guests or I require accessible seating?

A: There will be designated accessible seating at the front of the room. Ushers will be available to assist those with mobility needs by removing a chair to make space.
