University of Wisconsin Law School is excited to host a visit by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit on Thursday, April 18, 2024. This is an extraordinary opportunity to see the federal court in action and hear from the judges in a variety of settings. The Court will hear oral arguments for six cases in the morning. Afterward, the judges agreed to participate in events for students, faculty, staff and members of the bar. The names of the three judges will not be announced in advance. 

 

All Events: Security Requirements

Attendees must go through security for all of the day’s events, so please plan accordingly. Restrictions include the following:

9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Oral Arguments

Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. Security opens at 9 a.m. 

Registration is not required, but seating in Room 2260, where oral arguments will take place, is limited. Preference will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Overflow rooms will be available to accommodate attendees if room capacity is met. 

1:15 - 2:15 p.m.

Lunch with Seventh Circuit Judges and Law Clerks 

Security opens at 12:45 p.m.

2:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Seventh Circuit and Wisconsin Tribal Judges Panel  

Security opens at 2 p.m. 

Amanda White Eagle, director of UW Law’s Great Lakes Indigenous Law Center, will moderate a panel of two Wisconsin Tribal judges and three federal judges on how they address and collaborate on a broad range of issues.

Preference will be given to UW Law School students in Room 2260. 

4 - 5 p.m.

Seventh Circuit Continuing Legal Education Panel 

Security opens at 3:30 p.m. 

UW Law Professor Nina Varsava will moderate a Q&A in Room 2260 with three judges from the Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. They will discuss their paths to the bench, practicing before the court, and effective oral and written advocacy.

You will be able to receive 1.0 CLE credit pending approval by the Wisconsin Board of Bar Examiners. Register online now.

5 - 6:30 p.m.

Seventh Circuit, Attorney and Law School Reception

Security opens at 4:30 p.m. 

This is a private event only for attorneys and judges who attended the CLE as well as Law School faculty, staff and students.
