Professor Cassel's lecture is based on his 2011 book "Grounds of Judgement: Extraterritoriality in 19th-Century China and Japan."  Cassel is associate professor of history and director of Graduate Studies, LSA International Institute at the University of Michigan. He is strongly committed to multi-lingual and multi-archival research and is especially interested in historical problems where international relations, jurisprudence, institutional history and linguistics intersect. His fields of study include Late Imperial and Modern China, Sino-Japanese relations, treaty ports of East Asia, and the legal, political and institutional history of China.
