A fun end-of-semester event for law students! Simon Tam is an author, musician, and activist. He is best known as the founder and bassist of The Slants, the world’s first and only all-Asian American dance rock band.

He was named a champion of diverse issues by the White House and worked with President Obama’s campaign to fight bullying. He recently helped expand freedom of speech through winning a unanimous victory at the Supreme Court of the United States for the landmark case, Matal v. Tam. In Matal v. Tam, the Supreme Court held that the statutory ban on disparaging trademarks is a violation of free speech. Specifically, they ruled that the “disparagement clause” of the 1946 Lanham Act - the primary federal trademark statute in the US - unconstitutionally limited free speech and is invalid.

Tam will share his thoughts on his direct experience as an applicant going through the trademark registration process.
