The J. Willard Hurst Summer Institute in Legal History, which will be co-sponsored by the Law School's Institute for Legal Studies and the American Society for Legal History (ASLH), has been established to assist legal historians and others pursuing legal history scholarship in the early stages of their scholarly careers. Sponsorship by the Institute for Legal Studies was made possible by a generous grant from Frances Hurst. Applications for this year's Institute are due January 22, 2001 (see Web address below).

The Summer Institute will be held biannually for two weeks at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, beginning in June 2001. Each biannual Institute will be organized and led by a senior scholar, who will act as chair of that Institute. A committee of the ASLH will select up to 12 junior scholars as fellows who will attend the entire two-week session. In addition, two senior scholars will visit the Institute for two days each, to lead specialized sessions. At each biannual Institute, the Institute chair will shape the focus of the Institute by selecting readings, inviting visiting scholars, and coordinating the sessions. A typical day during the Institute is likely to include a seminar taught by either the chair or a visiting faculty member, based on a prior reading or research assignment, followed by a discussion; lunch in common; and a session at which a Fellow, who previously has circulated relevant materials, makes a work-in-progress presentation and leads the subsequent discussion.

A committee appointed by the ASLH will handle applications and the selection process for Fellows. Applications will be accepted from beginning faculty members, doctoral students who have completed or almost completed their dissertations, and J.D. graduates with appropriate backgrounds. The chair of the 2001 Summer Institute will be Lawrence Friedman of Stanford University Law School. Applications for the Institute may be obtained from ASLH at http://www2.h-net.msu.edu/~law/hurst.html.
