The 2001 University of Wisconsin Dean's Cup, an annual competition between the students of the UW Medical School and the UW Law School, begins Friday, Sept. 7 with a 5 p.m. match of Ultimate Frisbee, followed by Kickball, both at University Bay Fields.

Now in its seventh year, the competition aims both to foster camaraderie between the two schools and to contribute to the community through local charities. Scheduled competitions include a full range of sports and games (including darts, bowling, ice hockey, euchre, and Trivial Pursuit, to name only a few), the Kickoff Picnic on Sept. 14, a Food Drive, and the annual Blood Drive, held on four days in September during the Red Cross's Blood Drive on campus.

For a full schedule, see the Dean's Cup Web site at http://students.law.wisc.edu/deanscup .

The Dean's Cup originated in 1995, when several UW students (law and med) were visiting a friend during Spring Break and learned about the "Dean's Cup" at the University of Miami -- an annual fall athletic competition. The UW students Tim Stewart ( '97) and Tim Richer (UW Med) were inspired to start an event like this at UW ? but took the idea one step further by adding a distinctive Wisconsin element: the charitable component.
