The Law School's server room lost power early this morning (Friday, 4/20). Most systems were back on line within a few moments, but the Law Students server experienced problems restarting and was not on-line until just before 1:00 pm on Friday afternoon. This server contains all law students' home directories (or "R: drives"). This problem was unrelated to the the recent e-mail system migration. Nonetheless, the server outage has resulted in e-mail problems that may affect you. IF YOU TRIED TO LOG ONTO THE LAW SCHOOL'S NETWORK DURING THAT TIME, YOUR "R: DRIVE" WOULD HAVE FAILED TO CONNECT. If you then launched Eudora, you were probably prompted to re-enter your account information because Eudora could not find that information on your R: drive. If you DID re-enter your account information, any mail that you downloaded from that time until whenever you logged off of the computer IS STORED ON THE LOCAL HARD DRIVE OF WHATEVER COMPUTER YOU LOGGED INTO. This is because in the absence of the network (R:) drive, Eudora will revert to its default settings and store mail on the C: drive. If you log on now, your R: drive should be functional and Eudora will function normally (but you may have to change password authentication style from "APOP" to "Passwords" -- see http://www.law.wisc.edu/news/main.asp?ID=548 for details) BUT the mail you received during the server outage will NOT be in your R: drive mailboxes. If you suspect you have been affected by this, please go to the Law School Computer Lab and talk to a Computer Lab staff member for assistance.
