Eunice Gibson was City Attorney for Madison from 1991 to 2002, the first woman to hold this post. Currently, a majority of the assistant city attorneys in Madison are women, and Gibson was responsible for hiring most of them. She has been recognized as an authority on municipal law, and was named a Fellow of the Municipal Lawyers Association. She began with the City Attorney's Office in 1974, and retired earlier this year. She continues to be an activist, and has volunteered legal assistance in Kazakhstan and Montenegro.
The Marygold Melli Achievement Award, established in 1994 by the Madison-based Legal Association for Women, recognizes and celebrates every year an outstanding individual in Wisconsin who has made a substantial contribution to the interests of women in the law, has achieved professional excellence and has contibuted significantly to the eradication of gender bias in the legal system. The award honors Marygold Shire Melli, Professor Emerita at the University of Wisconsin Law School, a distinguished teacher, prolific scholar, parent of four children and contributor to her profession and community.
