Paul Higginbotham, a member of the University of Wisconsin Law School's Class of 1985, was sworn in Monday, October 20, 2003 as Fourth District Court of Appeals Judge in the Assembly Chambers of the state Capitol in Madison.
Higginbotham is the first African-American and the first person of color to serve on any Wisconsin appellate court.
Higginbotham was also Dane County's first African-American judge, elected to the bench in 1994. Before that, he served two years as the city of Madison's first municipal court judge, and was Dane County's minority affairs coordinator from 1988 to 1992. He also worked as a trial attorney.
Higginbotham began serving in his new postion Sept. 1, 2003.
