University of Wisconsin Law School Professor Howard S. Erlanger has been selected as one of four outstanding teachers throughout the University of Wisconsin System who will receive the fourteenth annual Alliant Energy Underkofler Excellence in Teaching Award.
The awards give recognition to extraordinary teachers within the UW System, said UW President Katharine Lyall in informing this year's recipients of the honor.
Erlanger was selected by a UW System committee in recognition of his uncommon commitment to teaching and his especially effective teaching strategies, as reported by numerous colleagues and former students. He teaches in the areas of wills, trusts, marital property, estate planning, and socio-legal studies.
Erlanger is Voss-Bascom Professor of Law and Professor of Sociology, and Director of the Law School's Institute for Legal Studies. He holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California at Berkeley, and a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School, and has taught on the UW faculty since 1971.
Erlanger is the recipient of a number of awards for his teaching and research, including the Steiger Award from the UW-Madison for excellence in teaching. He is President of the Law & Society Association, and has been the Review Section Editor of Law and Social Inquiry since 1982.
A formal awards ceremony to honor recipients of the System's Excellence in Teaching Award will be held in the fall on the UW-Madison campus.
