Attorney Allan Joseph, an alumnus of the University of Wisconsin Law School Class of 1962, will return to his alma mater on Monday, October 4, 2004 to give a lunchtime address to students and other members of the Law School community. Mr. Joseph's address will be in Sheldon Lubar Commons (Room 7200) at noon.
Mr. Joseph, who has been treasurer of the American Bar Association (ABA) since 2002, plans to talk about the ABA's activities and the benefits to law students and lawyers of participating in the organized bar. At 405,000 members, the ABA is the largest voluntary professional association in the world.
At the UW Law School, Allan Joseph received the Dahlberg Award, was Order of the Coif and served as an editor of the Law Review. From 1962 to 1965 he was an officer in the Army Judge Advocate General Corps.
Mr. Joseph is a founding partner in the San Francisco law firm of Rogers Joseph O?Donnell & Phillips. Since 1965, he has represented companies in a full range of government and commercial contract disputes.
His practice has encompassed all aspects of government contracts, including disputes with the government and between prime and subcontractors, construction claims, terminations, defective pricing, bid protests, rights in technical data and computer software and grants and cooperative agreements. He has defended many False Claims Act cases, particularly qui tam actions brought by whistleblowers. Mr. Joseph has also arbitrated and litigated a large number of complex commercial contract disputes involving major contracts for cargo and cruise ship conversions, computer software and hardware, construction projects and satellites.
Mr. Joseph has spoken throughout the country and published articles on a wide variety of government and commercial contract subjects. In 1975 he founded the Federal Publications course on Terminations, and he speaks each year at the Year-In-Review course on Terminations for Convenience. He serves on the Advisory Board of BNA's Federal Contract Reporter. During 1977-78 he was Chair of the ABA Public Contract Law Section.
He has served in leadership positions in the American Bar Association for more than thirty years.
