The closing ceremony of an 11-week-long seminar that provided Chinese officials a window into how American governments operate will be held Friday, Nov. 19, at 12:30 p.m. in the Pyle Center, 702 Langdon St.
The municipal government program, arranged by the East Asian Legal Studies Center at the UW Law School, trained 20 participants from the Xuhui District of the People's Government in Shanghai. The goal of the first-time program was to promote efficiency, professionalism and transparency and to provide information on budgeting, management and policymaking.
Participants met with various state, city and county officials in Wisconsin, including Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. They also traveled to Chicago, Washington, D.C. and New York City to view other governments at work.
During the program's final six weeks, participants took part in internships designed to let delegation members get a first-hand look at how government operates in Wisconsin. They worked in such varied areas as the state Department of Tourism, the Madison Department of Planning and Development, and the state Department of Commerce.
