"Forward! Strategies for Social and Legal Change," the National Lawyers? Guild (NLG) Midwest Regional Conference, will take place at the University of Wisconsin Law School Friday-Sunday, March 4-6, 2005, hosted by the UW Law School NLG chapter. The conference is open to the public.
Keynote speaker will be journalist Amy Goodman, host and executive producer of the widely syndicated national news program "Democracy Now." Her talk, at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, in B-10 Ingraham Hall, is free. The conference begins with the Friday evening screening of the film The Take, at 7 p.m. Information on location of events will be posted inside the Law School
A CLE program, Ethics & Community Lawyering, will be presented by Professor Juliet Brodie and staff attorney Victoria Selkowe of the Law School's Economic Justice Institute, on Sunday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Panel topics include Resistance to Military Service; Challenging Corporate Personhood, Realizing Democracy; Responding to the Increased Detention of Immigrants; Defending Equality in a Time of Backlash: Gay Rights Advocacy and the Marriage Debate; The New Movement for Election Reform; Innovative Approaches to Prisoner Re-Entry; and several others.
Major sponsors of the conference are the Laurie Carlson Progressive Ideas Forum, Havens Center for the Study of Social Structure and Social Change, and the Midwest Region of the NLG. The National Lawyers? Guild is dedicated to the need for basic change in the structure of the political and economic system of the country, and includes lawyers, law students, and legal workers.
