The UW Women's Law Student Association (WLSA) will host ?Careers and Cocktails? on Wednesday, April 6 at 5 p.m. in Lubar Commons (Room 7200). The event will feature a panel discussion by women lawyers who practice in a variety of legal settings. All students are welcome and encouraged to attend. The event is free, made possible by WLSA fund-raising projects such as the popular silent auction.
The 2005 silent auction, held in early March, included more than seventy different items and yielded close to $2,000.Local restaurants and merchants donated gift certificates and merchandise, while students and professors offered home-baked items. Professors also offered ?classes? on balloon-animal making, cooking and reiki.
Several donations have become popular staples of the WLSA auction. A statuette of the Law School's symbol, the gargoyle, donated every year by the Wisconsin Law Alumni Association, traditionally has students sneaking bids in up to the last minute. The brunch hosted at Professor Howard Erlanger's home is another popular item each year.
WLSA allocates funds raised by the auction to several projects. Each year the organization hosts a fall social event (this year it was a wine tasting); WLSA sends members to the national Women's Law Student annual conference and moot court competition; and two scholarships are awarded to graduating WLSA members who will go on to practice in areas of law that affect women's issues.Submitted by on March 31, 2005
