UW Law School clinical professor and attorney Martha E. (Meg) Gaines has been awarded the Lane W. Adams Quality of Life Award by the American Cancer Society.  Gaines is one of 10 national winners of the honor, which recognizes exemplary cancer care.

Gaines is Director of the Center for Patient Partnerships, an interdisciplinary project based at the UW Law School, whose mission is to provide individuals recently diagnosed with cancer or other serious diseases to navigate the red tape and confusion of the healthcare system, partnering with healthcare providers to achieve successful healthcare outcomes.

"I am extremely honored to have been named a recipient of this meaningful award," Gaines commented.  "The Adams Award has historically been awarded to healthcare providers, and it is significant that the American Cancer Society is now reaching out to honor contributions from individuals in other professions."

The award will be conferred formally on Gaines and her co-winners in Atlanta in May 2006, at a ceremony conducted by leaders of the American Cancer Society.
