Two of the four individuals who will receive the Wisconsin Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award for 2006 are graduates of the UW Law School. Jeffrey Bartell ‘68, a founding partner of Quarles & Brady, and Pat Richter ‘71, former UW Director of Athletics, will be recognized for outstanding service to their profession and to the state of Wisconsin in the May 5 Awards Program at Memorial Union Theater. Jeffrey Bartell has served Wisconsin both as Assistant Attorney General and as Commissioner of Securities. His law career been an active one of service to his profession and the state, and in addition, the hours he dedicates to UW-Madison and the arts community have been called the equivalent of a full-time job. He is a member of the Bascom Hill Society and the Law School’s Benchers Society, and he chaired the successful $1 million capital campaign for the Memorial Union’s Director’s Fund. Pat Richter holds the record for the longest tenured UW-Madison director of athletics, serving in the position through three administrations. He brought the department out of a $2.1 million budget deficit, a budget that now has a reserve of $6.4 million. Joining Richter and Bartell as recipients of the award are Russell Peterson UW ‘38, former Governor of Delaware and former National Audubon Society President, and Judith Hicks Stiehm ‘57, Professor of Political Science, Florida International University. At the May 5 Awards Program in Memorial Union Theater, Law School Dean Kenneth B. Davis, Jr., has been selected to give opening remarks to introduce Jeffrey Bartell.
